Ocnele is a city in Valcea , Romania. It has a population of 3309 inhabitants. It is one of the oldest human settlements in this region of Oltenia, due to importance of salt.
The city is situated in the central-southern part of Romania , in the Subcarpathians Vâlcii , along Valley Stream Salty .

In Ocnele can be reached using the road DN 67 (street Copăcelu the city of Ramnicu Valcea ) and Street Alexandru Ioan Cuza section which intersects it.

The settlement is situated in a valley at an altitude of about 320 m and is surrounded by hills with an altitude between 400 and 600 m.

Under these hills is a massive salt of about 600 m thick, which is the main natural resource of the place and that was exploited in ancient times, in fact giving the village its name ( “ocna” means “salt mine”).

Salina from Ocnele is the largest in the country, covers an area of over 20,000 square meters and 13,000 meters length exceeds galleries [3] . Salt mining has been done and is doing by extracting lumps (maglia) of saline (salt mine known as the saline ). From mid 1950 , due to the emergence USG SA , its past and saturated salt mining by using probes.

This last system in recent years has led to the collapse of underground caverns created by mining in the saturated salt (brine) over an area of ​​about 50 hectares, producing problems such as environmental and above all social.

Another great natural wealth of the place is and tufa limestone ( “shore” as the locals call it), and exploited it for various industrial products.

According to the census conducted in 2011 , the city population Ocnele amounts to 3309 inhabitants, down from the previous census in 2002 , when it had registered 3.563 inhabitants. Most of the inhabitants are Romanian (92.57%). To 6.5% of the population, ethnicity is not known. In terms of confessional, most residents are Orthodox (93.08%). To 6.5% of the population is not known confessional.
