Artist Poses Next To Movie Ads To Raise Awareness Of Violent Imagery In Public Spaces
NYC-based artist Jon Burgerman shocks his blog readers by uploading horrid pictures of him shot and covered in blood in the background of advertising panels. The artist takes these pictures in subways, adds blood digitally and then shares them online. Named Head Shots, these drastic publicly-staged interventions are an ongoing series that intends to show us how film ads blatantly promote violence.
Burgerman told gothamist: “It’s my belief that through these playful, creative acts, Art can act as an agent to change the world, by being the catalysis to allow people to change their worlds in really simple ways. The goal with head shots was just to make people look again at and re-evaluate the type of imagery we have no choice of avoiding in our public spaces.“
Ironically, these images were rejected by a newspaper in the UK because they were considered to be too violent – the fact that these ads are displayed in public notwithstanding.
