After he got his younger brother an expensive gift, she decided that it wasn’t enough. But there is a difference in buying something for your brother, and your Mother erasing you in that gift, not only had he told her already she could add herself to the gift as a giver knowing in advance she most likely was not going to spend on him, she went even further as to ask for money. This older brother is essentially the one providing for his sibling, by being born he does not owe her that.
