Well, it started with adult coloring books – which I’ve been creating and self-publishing this past year, and it’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve done as an artist. I love, love, love it! There’s definitely an art to designing images for coloring, and I feel like I’m learning and getting better everyday, and having a blast exploring the possibilities of the genre.
I’d never done a “holiday themed” book before, but Halloween was coming up (my favorite holiday) and doing something spooky sounded like fun. But I had to find something different – some kind of unique concept that would set my book apart. So I started brainstorming and came up with “Slendermandala” – combining the infamous internet creep “The Slender Man” with the popular mandala design concept – and got to work.
I kinda went a little nuts – creating a design that was more intricate and complex than I’d done before, but after running it by my Cristina McAllister Coloring Club members and getting a Thumbs-Up, I began compiling my list of “Monstrous Mandalas” and designing a macabre menagerie of creepy creatures from myth, folklore, literature and pop culture. The result is a collection that’s not just great for Halloween – but a year-round treat for anyone who loves darkly delightful art and detailed, engrossing coloring designs.
