Joyful Crayon Sculptures That I Carve After Spending All Day Taking 911 Calls
Over the past year I’ve carved and sculpted crayons into characters and designs, mostly just using a dental scraper and alcohol lamp. All of them are made 100% from crayon, with extra color being added using melted wax from other crayons. For me crayons are a naturally appealing medium. Art is about taking what people know and subverting their expectations so they can see something in a different way.
I take 911 calls for a living. On many days that means I hear some of the worst things one human can do to another. The crayons I carve serve as a counterpoint to that. That’s why so many of them are pop culture characters or references. I try to carve things that are innocent and joyful, things that people have fond memories of.
