Someone Called This Girl’s Japanese Tea Party Racist, But Then This Japanese User Stepped In
A Utah mom inadvertently sparked a fire when she threw a Japanese-themed birthday party for her daughter, Caitlyn, and posted about it on her blog. Tumblr somehow got a hold of it, and some users started dragging the mom for encouraging racism. One commentator, who happened to be Japanese, however, came in to set the record straight, and it was pretty much the mic drop of the century.
The mom in question, who runs a party planning blog called The Gala Gals, is just one of the latest people to enter the fierce modern debate on cultural appropriation, and when it is and isn’t okay. Do you dress up as people from other countries in order to make fun of them? You’re probably a racist. Do you like wearing a kimono because you appreciate its beauty and historical significance to Japan? Go right ahead. A strong argument can be made, after all, that stigmatizing the sharing of cultural elements only creates more distance between us.
Read how this latest Tumblr spat played out below, and let us know what your take on the issue is at the end!

Wow, people getting triggered by a little girl trying to embrace a different culture, what is happening to the world...
My thoughts exactly. It seems to me that sometimes people are just trying to pick a fight, with their claws out and ready to draw blood. :(
Load More Replies...So true, I grew up in Japan and I have mostly Japanese decorations in my house. We have pictures of ourselves in Japanese attire and everything. people who havent been exposed to different cultures sure have a way of calling out racism. I never heard the term racism or experienced it when i moved back into the U.S.
Jo Turner, the makeup is part of the costume to look authentic, in appreciation for the culture. Nothing wrong was done. It is a compliment to appreciate others' cultures.
Jo Tuner, it is quite a bit different whether one is wearing makeup to look like another race or wearing makeup as worn by another race to get the same effect.
The phrase is "virtue signaling" comes to mind. They want to signal to everybody how progressive they are even when they are doing the opposite.
Actual progressives probably despise SJWs even more than conservatives do.
It's SJWs. For all their virtue signalling, they don't see minorities as equals. They see them as pets to protect, even when there's no actual attack. You ever watched one white person sit and talk to another white person about the "black experience" or the "Asian experience"? It's revolting.
Social media is what happened. All people (even those who really should just stay off their soap box) have an easily accessible source to project their opinions and complain about anything and everything for the whole wide world to see.
I'm sure at the party, they also LEARNED about the other culture.
Exactly. Soon they'll call it racist to learn another language... This world vision is made by people who are BORED AS HELL in life, who are addicted to drama, who want to shame others because they can't deal with their own issues, or worse; all of these. Europe and USA has always had a particular attraction for Asian cultures, that's why UK has chai, we had opium, oriental carpets and so on. Sharing (culture) is caring <3
Just more white SJW who feel they have to get offended on the behalf of other races because they don't believe other races know what is best for themselves.
I had to downvote you for use of the word "triggered." That's like saying you were raped when someone accidentally touched your a*s as they brushed past you in a crowd. Don't ever compare people choosing to be offended to people suffering from PTSD panic attacks.
It's also rather ironic that the object of this perceived racism is the Japanese... who, still today, have a massive race/ethnicity/xenophobia element ingrained in their society. When I lived there it ranged as everything from overt ignorant outbursts to subtle racism like "correcting" my behaviour, which I normally wouldn't mind but for the fact they were correcting things I wasn't even doing wrong.
Jimmy please check out more about those people, they're really becoming a thing... Unfortunately.
We're waking up to a lot of ways where western cultural assimilation has been very negative and continues to ride roughshod
ABSOLUTELY !!!!!!! BUT SOME PEOPLE JUST CAN'T HAVE FUN WITHOUT SOMEONE STARTING C**P.

not the world, just the USA what is Happening the USA, ?, well USA far right propaganda has instilled fear in the USA population for 20 years a portion of that population has bought into this fear and here we have the results. A portion of the USA citizens (Ignorant enough of their position on the continent), having the position that other cultures are threatening them. Ignorance at its best with a hint of paranoia.
No it's the left wing nuts that are such snowflakes and SJW that nobody can say anything without some whinny a*s baby getting butt hurt

It's not happening to the world,it's happening to the moronic Liberal Democ Rats.
Ahahaha! Great answer from that Japanese commenter! Good to read some common sense smashing in to destroy all the self-righteous fools. His/her words totally speak my mind. Also, to point out double standards, nobody complaints about the whole world appropriating Scotch skirts. Guess it's because Scotland's in Europe.
What, in the name of all that's holy, is a "Scotch skirt"? Something that ladies wear when they are drinking whisky? Would you, by any chance be referring to my countries Male National dress, the Scottish Kilt?
Load More Replies...I, an American with some Scottish ancestry, received my first kilt as a child—it was a gift from my paternal Grandmother. The most beautiful part of the gift was she did her research to make sure the kilt's pattern reflected my family's cultural history (clan Grant). And what was even more special is that my Scottish ancestry is from my Mom's lineage.
A Scotsman once told me that the difference between a kilt and a skirt is that the kilt is worn by someone who can kick your a*s.
If he doesn't know the right name of your country's traditional costume, teach him :'D I'm not a native speaker either, today I learn the word "kilt" for the 1st time.
Aye Alan! Scotch is a drink and Scots are a people! Git your a**e out of here! (hoping folks remember the skit with Mike Myers...)
i'm french, we call it kilt here^^ this is a little much more than a plaid.like Owiella said the pattern is a part of history and the "prince of wales" pattern exists because the english nobility in Scotland were jealous because Scottish clans had a pattern for a clan (and for their "employees" to show the greatness/power of clan), and they were not authorised to wear real kilts patterns, so they create others (very similar) for them to show their own greatness/nobilty without breaking the law. Humanity did'nt changed we fight over cultures centuries after...
and how would you describe kilt? It looks like a skirt am I right...please everyone knows your nation dress just because it looks like skirt!my husband always laugh at me when I say tartan skirt ...he knows what I mean and that I don't mean any disrespect!you better not ask random foreign in your country if they are polish because believe me we aren't all from there. but we at least know how your national dress look like...so pardon her for using the "European description" just like you call ikea so not the way the Swedish people do!!!
im really glad wyndmere is here to tell us what things in our sports playing in our country are called

What relevance does this have?
Uhm, guess I need to make some things clear here. Peter Bear is the one who exactly got my point. Also, my "not a native speaker", didn't refer to not knowing the word "kilt" (I come from punk roots, for crying out loud!), it was referring to the scotch/scottish/scots' adjectives. The reason I called kilts like that was to make my point a little more obvious, but obviously I failed.
your point was pretty well hidden - it just seemed like ignorance
I agree with your view regarding the Japanese person's response. However, you have done yourself a disservice with regard to your ignorance of things Scottish. Scotch is whiskey! A kilt is not a skirt. And a Scottish person is a Scot. Learn and grow...
Sorry folks. My stupid computer has repeated my comment ad nauseum, much to my dismay. Once was enough, wouldn't you say? :)

I'm seriously amused at how downvoted my comment was Lol. Sheeple are so afraid to question a feel good viral story it's ridiculous lol. It's like people are afraid of people who think or question or are pretending to sound smart" Lol l according to one reply. Yeah It feels really good to jump on the bandwagon so just go ahead and believe whatever you see online without questioning It. I mean her profile pic is Japanese so suuuuure she must really be a Japanese person living in Japan talking about how it's acceptible to c**p on white people. Beginning to understand more why we have a total jackass in the whitehouse.

I don't know, the last part of her comment was weird....saying it's acceptable to c**p all over white people on Tumblr. Huh? And her saying that 80% of Japanese culture comes from other cultures.....not exacfly. She also had to tell us she was "Japanese in Japan right now" lol) I seen this in comment threads before......People pretending to be or represent a certain race/culture to give their argument more credit or power, but then they say weird or innacurate stuff that gives them away. I think it's actually an angry white person posing, and just loving all the drama thier b******t comment has caused:
-_- she was criticizing Tumblr users for crapping all over white people, not making a statement that it is acceptable...read again! and yes, great part of Japanese culture comes from other cultures...and yes I'm half japanese :D problem?
Cesi, it takes two seconds to type that person's name into Tumblr, look at their profile and see that they are indeed who they say they are. Also clearly that last part was meant sarcastically; she (or he depending on which one of them was writing(it's a joint tumblr)) was just pointing out that it's what everyone seems to do these days.
How unfortunate that instead of using internet to research useful things, people use to vomit their stupidity everywhere. Nowadays, everyone is so butthurt out of nothing. You cant say colour "black" without some over-sensitive b***h getting all worked up about it. I had a similar experience when I once posted a photo of myself wearing a long colourful "gypsy" skirt...I was called racist despite trying to explain that i didnt mean it in a bad way. I mean if I am a racist, that mean i hate the gypsy culture, then why the f**k would I wear a "gypsy skirt" and call it beautiful and pose in it. People need to learn to differentiate the tone of voice & the context before they open their bloody mouth!
Yes ! I once wore a gypsy skirt for halloween when I was around 10 years old, and when I got to one house the woman gasped, and exclaimed in joy in a foreign language. She was Roma, and just loved my costume! She gave me like five handfuls of candy, versus one piece for my friends, and I got a huge wonderful hug too.
Load More Replies...I had a similar experience a few years ago. I was working at a Haunted House taking tickets. A Gypsy brother & sister came up to me and said I looked like their grandmother as a young girl in old photos they had. They were not offended. They thought it was great. I was thrilled that my costume was authentic. Only someone who always sees things in their darkest context could call that "racist".
One time on Halloween, I dressed up in a Mexican "day of the dead costume" with a frilly Mexican style shirt and a sombrero (I had also painted my face in the sugar skull style) and this women on the street started yelling at me and my parents that we were being "racist" but when I got to an actual Mexican house the woman who opened the door was absolutely thrilled! She started crying and said that it's so nice that people acknowledge the day of the dead! She then gave 6 of these really tasty sweet and spicy chilli bars (actually Mexican)
That's because gypsies are considered filth in their home countries. Its so sad Gypsy children are not adopted because nobody wants them; the poor sweet babes. I was a gypsie 5 years for halloween as a kid. Loved playing dress up and allowing that has caused me to take an interest as an adult into the culture and has made me feel closer to the people.
I think the issue here may be the term "gypsy," rather than wearing the skirt. For many Roma, the word itself is a slur. As far as I'm aware (not an expert!) wearing the clothing isn't an issue unless it's done to mock.
It's Rom or Romany, not "gypsy." Too many people don't know this yet.
I see your point, and it is fair, but I also understand why people are upset with you calling it a "gypsy" skirt. Unfortunately, the term "gypsy" is an ethnic slur. Wearing a part of Roma culture and then calling it Gypsy, would be sort of equatable to saying you like rap music, but calling it "N-word" music. As with anything, some people in he culture won't have a problem with it, some people will. I think that both opinions should be valid.

Maybe don't call it a "gypsy" skirt... That's a racial slur. Nobody gets butthurt if you say black. You're such a delicate snowflake I can't believe people like you actually exists in the world freely and aren't institutionalized.

It is so unfortunate that you would reply to this post without doing your research. It's like you can't even dress your kid up like a dead prostitute and people are all but hurt. Ps kimono wrapped right over left is how we dress our dead for a funeral. Also the chopsticks are displayed like they would be for a funeral as well. Aaaaaaand I could go on and on but sure, teaching how to be offensive and rude in another culture is the same thing as respect right ?

The word g*psy is a racist slur, just fyi.
As someone who has gypsy blood, and as I have seen from others with the same heritage, we do not give a f**k.
Actually, Allison and Shasta, it does indeed refer to a race of people. Specifically the Romani, who hailed from the area now known as Punjab and a few areas around that. Romani speak several dialects, and the words Rom and Roma specifically refer to male and female members of their, (key point here), ethnic group. In that sense, it is indeed very much a racial slur. That said, capitalization matters, and the word gypsy has been used as a noun to describe a wanderer for decades. And to just lump the word into being an offensive slur is both ignorant of language, and just plain incorrect.
Lets just stop here for a second. rac·ism noun prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race. SO.. It's not Racist. Gypsies are from all cultures and from all over the world. Technically it's a cultural slur. Because they were looked poorly on as thieves and "unchristian" hence the term "I've been gypped" Gypsies were known as "Travelers" If we're going to get really technical. But racist would indicate that they were of one race or ethnicity. That is just untrue. because part of their appeal is that they are a mix of ethnic backgrounds. People from all over who formed a travelling family or families that didn't or couldn't settle for whatever reason. On a different note, My family is descended from Irish Gypsies and I use that term proudly. as does everyone I know who is a gypsy, or lives that kind of lifestyle. The only ones who consider it racist are those who don't know any better or haven't done their research on actual gypsy culture.

Well not to mention that "gypsy" isn't a race so doubly stupid all the way around. :-P
Tell that to Hitler, who rounded them up for slaughter during the Holocaust. http://www.crystalinks.com/romapeople.html
Now see, the original post here was no reason for anyone to be upset. But this is something for people to take issue with. The Romani have lots of history. Their languages have words (Rom, Roma) to describe males and females of their ethnic group. And people being ignorant of that is sad. Though technically, this is correct, since you said gypsy with a lower case G, which is invoking the noun, rather than the verb. I have my doubts that you typed this aware of the distinction however.
