It's common sense that using an ATM requires a certain degree of caution, but if you think getting mugged at the machine is all you have to look out for, you're in for a shock. ATM scams are getting more creative by the day, and you need to know how they work and what you can do to protect yourself against these money scams.
Just because a machine looks normal at first glance, it doesn't mean it hasn't been used for scamming money. ATM skimmers, cash traps, and system hacks are all becoming commonplace in the dark world of fraud, and most of the time, they're fully concealed inside the ATM.
While there's little you can do once the scamming device is already installed, you can dodge it by sticking to ATMs from banks you trust, covering your PIN from possible hidden cameras, and setting up transaction alerts on your bank account so you can easily intercept any suspicious activity. If you do become a victim of fraud, it goes without saying that issuing a scammer alert to your bank and canceling your card is a must-do.

From a technological point of view, some of these are quite impressive. From a user point of view, this is an annoyance. Actually, common sense can be expected, but it simply is not feasible that you more or less need to try to dismantle the machine before knowing it is safe to use... On the other hand, at least according to European law and legislation, customers are typically not liable to this kind of fraud unless they have acted neglient. Thus, the banks are asked to make ATMs tamper-resistant in their own interest.

For some reason I have only used an ATM just one time, in several years. I'm aware of the possible scams, but I have always felt more comfortable with either going to the bank where I make deposits, or obtaining cash when I am making a transaction at one of the three grocery stores I frequent. I certainly feel much better at the end of the day. ;D

I used to while living in England, now 20 years later they start to offer this service in Germany too. But not many stores do cashback yet
