Kids today might find this hard to believe, but there really was a period in time when smartphones didn't exist. But how did they entertain themselves?. How did they survive without instant and constant access to hilarious videos of cats being cats and people failing at stuff?
Well, actually, they managed just fine. Check out these vintage pictures of children enjoying themselves before mobile phones were invented to see what we mean. Compiled by Bored Panda, the list serves as an important reminder that all you really need to enjoy yourself is a little bit of imagination. Don't forget to vote for your favorite!

Girl Playing For Her Dog
Children In A Manchester Street Find Their Own Enjoyment With The Aid Of A Rope And A Lamp Post, 1946
Health and Safety violation right there. Shut these kids down.
Just after WW11. They didn't have any choice except to make their own fun. The wartime deprevations in Britain went on for years.
Children Playing "Push The Peanut", King's Cross Street London, 1938
Imagine that!? Kids with their noses on the ground, crawling.... and most likely no child died as a direct result. People are so germaphobic these days - THAT is what's frightening!
Child mortality in the UK in 1938 was 74 of 1000 children would die before age of 6. Today it's less than 5. I'm not blaming Push the Peanut for it, a timeless classic of competitive gaming, but a little bit of "germophobia" isn't a bad idea per se.
Load More Replies...Technology has stopped this amazing game?! NOOOOoooo!!!...
Yeah.. no kid would want to do this in any major city today... and dont even mention how their moms would react
Best Friends
Still happens but dogs like to lick their a*s and people are less likely to use a public fountain
Girl Dancing In Front Of Her Teddy Bear, Paris, 1961
I LOVE the way kids valued their toys back then. Toys were treasured because kids were lucky to have them. We lined up our little stuffed animals and performed plays for them.
this is so pure <3 i used to perform to my dolls when i was about 5 :)
Two Little Kids Dancing On The Streets Of New York City, 1940s
This little girl is a born comedienne .. the facial expression is priceless!
Not faked. The Hispanic and Black communities lived side by side peacefully in parts of NYC (like Harlem) back in the day. Still do

Zoos have figured out they can make money with this one. They charge you to go in the 2 level enclosure to feed giraffes at some zoos.
One kid gets lifted in the air to feed a giraffe, the over gets a nice slap on the face
Remember that SF tiger that mauled the 2 dumbass teens? They weren't on their phones either
Three Boys Are Fishing For Change During The Great Depression, New York, 1930
No, not at all; but that's the great thing about kids. It might have been a survival activity, yet they may have turned it into a game. Maybe they made it a competition.
Load More Replies...I'm a child of the late 50'es. I got my cousin talked into walking the streets where we lived, in order to do exactly what those lads are doing.it was mostly a bullet proof way to top up the pocket monies :-) I'd devised a cane of roughly three feet long with a well chewed piece of gum stuck to one end of the stick. That was the vital bit of the kit, as that little gum had to pick up what we spotted ;-).
Ok so it's not technically 'playing,' but it's finding something to do.... doing stuff! And that's the point isnt it? Not moping about whinging and bugging mum and dad because they're bored.
I don't think they are playing, I think the family is just desperate for money
These days they would be fishing for pokemon. Love the hats though. Bring that back.
Even The Dog Gets A Go On This See-Saw, Northamptonshire
One of my favorite games to play as a kid. I remember my neighbor had one in their backyard.
Looks like this could have been straight out of the Little Rascals. Super cute

I need to find out who took this photo..the boy on the left looks exactly like my son! His that age now.

This was before we could put our children in the tumble dryer.
I...may have done that to my brother. (He said he could get in the dryer, I said he couldn't. Then I turned it on.) pt1

Children Drawing With Chalk, Manchester, 1966
This is one I believe hasn't died in years gone by. I do see kids or sidewalk and street art every year. I remember drawing our hopscotch game on the pavement with chalk
I agree. Every Spring and Summer I see chalk drawings up and down the sidewalks in my neighborhood
Load More Replies...See now, we children can't even do this if we wanted to because now "vandalism" is banned.
I used to do this with my brother, and now I babysit and we do this. I don't understand how this is 'vandalism'. It just washes away.
Load More Replies...Kids still do this all the time where I live. I see it everywhere.
And if you didn't have any chalk, you drew your pictures or your hopscotch with the sharp edge of a rock or piece of concrete.
Well sorry to burst your bubble but kids still go out and play. Ny nieces have toys they go out and play in garden, they go into.playgrounds, they draw chalk on street. They play with other kids and so on. It all depends on parents. If you allow them to spend all the time in front of tv, your faut. But no different than kids before. You just dont let them out on streets alone when they are 6 these days, as people.reaslised it may be dangerous, you know with all the cars.around.
Kids Dancing In The Street, New York, 1964
Set up by the fire dept. during a heat wave. People so poor they didn't have air conditioning, some as you can see didn't even own a bathing suit.
Why a bathing suit? This was before the dumb prudery in the US. You could wear a wet T-Shirt without getting sued for it.
Load More Replies...What a great gesture by the fire brigade.. the kids would have totally loved this and what a way to cool down...
A Young Boy Wearing An Indian Headdress Hides In A Coal Hole And Takes Aim With A Toy Pistol, London, 1954
Nowadays a kid can't even own a toy gun and people would call the head dress as 'profiling' or any numerous other terms
You're right; We should totally re-enact the cultural norms of 1954, because -- although black children were being killed for simply looking at a white woman -- at least we could wear Indian head-dresses in public. :/
Load More Replies...Adults would freak out at how unsafe this was. Times have changed and we can't do what we used to be able to do any more.
His mum would have been so thrilled at the state if his clothes and him. Let's hope it was bath night.
Toy gun would get a person shot nowadays... It did back then too but wasn't really talked about
Children Playing, New York, 1940s
We used to play on the roof of the house. We also used to climb trees equally as tall, or taller. NEVER once did a child fall or get hurt. Kids are adaptable that way. A child can get hurt falling off a skateboard or bicycle, it's just as easy
Some kids continue the tradition to climb on trees. I do it very often, especially if it`s hot and I stay out all day because it`s a good place to enjoy the snacks you brought from your house. My sister and I spent half the summer last year watching the world going by from one high and comfortable plane tree(one of my favourite tree species).
Load More Replies...There have been many things I let my kids do that gave me "momma trauma" like climbing trees and trying daring stunts. This, though, is definitely too far. Had one kid crack his skull on concrete once and he was on ground level to start with!
Load More Replies...It's not fair though. Now no kids are ever allowed to do anything dangerous because we might get hurt. We miss out on so much it's not fair.
And adults blame us for everything. I'm 13 and trust me when I say that we're not allowed to make mistakes.
Load More Replies...I would call this death defying rather than playing given the landing surface
All it took was a couple of kids falling to their deaths or spending the rest of their life being spoon fed and a couple of lawsuits and this bit of fun ended
Climbing still happens: my son (now 10) could be found all the way up in a lamppost when he was 6 years old. He survived. ;)
Police Officer Playing With Children, Harlem, 1978

Ten-Year-Old Martin Witter Watches Two Snails Race In His Home In Lynwood, California, 1954
The attention span needed for that activity is too much for most kids these days. It's not their fault, its society's.
That`s nostalgic... I used to keep snails (the white shell ones in the grass) in small candy boxes. Once they escaped and I had great fun looking for them in our house plants. After that I decided to release them even though at first, I considered keeping them as pets:)
Nigel, what are you doing? Nothing, Mum, just watching snails race. It's really excitinnggggggg ... zzz ...

We used to try to get the swing to flip over the pole! Of course that would be impossible, but on a good 10 foot (3 meters) tall swing set it would certainly feel like you were about to go around!
I was always too scared to flip it over the cross beam but Marty next-door could do it....!

You were both so lucky! I like playing indoors and outdoors but I have the unfortunate luck to live in a boring overcrowded neighbourhood where everyone think we, the bigger kids, don`t have the right to have some fun. I think it`s a high time for me to move in the countryside to get away.

Adults would disapprove. It's not that kids don't want to play, it's just that we don't get as many opportunities any more.

Children Looking At Billboard Adds, New York, 1950s
I don't think they were necessarily looking at ads, I think they were looking at ladies in their undergarments. This would have been more on the seductive side for the 1950's.
I doubt this is New York since the text of those adds seems to be German.
This is not New York but looks like Germany. Advert in German and Lederhosen suggests so.
I doubt they would show German ads in New York and this lighthouse looks way too Northern-German either.
Don't think that's NY folks. I'd say that's Germany from the copy on the ads!
They are all three for the brand 'Selina'. It says sort of: get a more beautiful shape/body with I think it's about shaping underwear.

It's not just that there are no smart phones. It is also the fact that modern parents are way too overprotective, and too many of those activities would horrify most of them. All that climbing, jumping... and toy guns? Oh, the horror (and that's called sarcasm, in case you didn't get it!)
I once threw a small seventh birthday party for my daughter when we had an evergreen tree with very low branches. My kids and two of my daughter's friends were in the tree very low when their parents arrived to pick them up and both sets of parents just freaked out that I let them in a tree. The parents didn't even have to reach up for them. They were literally low enough that a parent just reached over and plucked them like goofy fruit from the branch. I felt very sad for those children.

I think it's possible to have a balance between technology and nature. When I was a kid, I had an Atari, a Commodore 64, and later, a Nintendo, but I still played outside a lot. My kids each had electronic gadgets as older kids (computer, tablet), but didn't get phones until they were teens. There are actually really good educational apps nowadays and apps that can help keep your kids safe, not to mention they have no excuse to not call you when they have a phone. For us, it is all about setting boundaries with the tech and making sure they still get outside.
