Why is this shocking? One of my cats died last year at the ripe old age of 23.

One of my kitties lived to be 19.

My older cat just turned 21 so yes, it's possible.

What is surprising in this? We have humans that live until more than 100 years, and humans that don't even become adults. Same thing with other animals like cats: some live until 20+ years and some don't even pass the 10 years old limit.

I have a 19-year-old cat too, she'll be 20 in September.

We actually just put our 19 year old cat down last Thursday. He could no longer stand on his own, and wasn't going to make it much longer. Cats can live to be pretty old. I also have a 17 year old Birman mix.

What's so unusual about a 19-year-old cat? There are a lot of them around. Several years ago, I had a 20-year old cat that developed mammary tumors. She had surgery, and lived another active, happy 2 years to pass in her sleep right after her 22nd birthday.

The oldest cat ever, recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records, died at (drumroll) 38!! TWICE 19!! Some cats have super genes, good families, good luck, good Karma...whatever. I actually heard of one recently who lived longer, but she hasn't "made the books" yet.

My cat is 19 yrs old, diabetic and still fierce :)

Small dogs and cats can live to be really old. I had a cat who was nearly 23 when she died. Our Yorkie has a life expectancy of anything from 16 up to 22. The smaller the animal the less strain on it's heart and circulatory systems for instance.
