French Artist JR Installs Giant Athletes Across Rio’s Urban Landscape For 2016 Olympic Games
To celebrate the beginning of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, French street artist JR wanted to do something special. And as you can see from these awesome installations, he’s definitely succeeded.
The two giant athletes, which are part of the artist’s ongoing ‘inside out’ project, are made out of scaffolding and are currently on display in Rio de Janeiro. The high jumper is 27-year-old Mohamed Younes Idress, a Sudan-born, Germany-based athlete who, according to JR on Instagram, “missed out on qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics but he is there some how.” The second installation, which took the artist around a year to complete, represents a swimmer diving into the ocean. The opening ceremony for the Rio Olympics begins on August 5th 2016, and over 11,000 athletes from 207 countries will compete.
