Usually, when you read a history article or story, it's mostly just dry facts and your imagination. But an amazing photo gives something a bit different. It shows you how it all actually looked, letting you understand the historical moment more intimately. Whether it would be a historical landmark, a famous person or random old pictures of the past - they all have fascinating stories behind them, and we're just about to show you.

The brave photojournalists that took these interesting pictures saw the morbidity of wars, documented the creation of an atomic bomb and shot stills of most magnificent constructions being built. You might not be aware that the city of Tel-Aviv used to be just plain dunes or how someone looks after literally falling from space. Keep on scrolling to take a look at Bored Panda's list of rare historical photos that might shine a new light on how you saw these crucial moments.

Wondering how historical photos taken in black and white would look if they were restored in color? Check out this article.

I can't even imagine going through that. It makes me sad not just for her but that there were that many people in one place being so mean and hurtful to a fellow human being. We like to think things have changed but there is still plenty of people to fill 1000s of high school auditoriums, who would act the same way. :( I would be heartbroken if I found out my kids ever acted this way.

Ginger snap that's why it's important to set a good example. Racism, bigotry and bulling aren't born traits they're learned. So it's up to those of us that want to see this change to set an example for the change. Be careful of how we express our anger and sadness because we always have our children watching

It has repeated w/ the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) forcefully taking millions of Muslims into their own version of concentration camps and trying to strip them of their beliefs with torture, beatings, humiliation, intimidation, starving, and ultimately murdering anyone who refuses or goes against them in anyway. It's crazy that most people don't know about this and that history has and almost always repeats itself.

He’s actually just surprised. Getting a hearing aid is often painful physically and takes years to understand and get used to. He is not for sure happy to hear. Often deaf individuals don’t like hearing aids and take them off one they get them. It doesn’t sound like how we hear things, it’s just signals being sent to the brain by a machine that definitely doesn’t replicate “natural “ hearing. It is a very cute picture but he actually is probably confused. I preferred using sign language myself 🙂

This picture is quite irrelevant. It is taken 3 am on the Sunday morning at Kungsgatan in Stockholm - some rockers there were having fun at this very well plannend and very successfully done change from left- to right side driving. In 1967 traffic accidents went down in Sweden. Public transportations had been prepared several years for the change.

I visited Sweden a couple of years before the switch, on a school exchange. Being a passenger was quite a scary experience, because while they drove on the left, the cars were all also left-hand drive. So the driver would rely on the passengers for information when wanting to overtake and so on. While the majority of the world drives on the left, Sweden deciding to switch, when all the countries around it drove on the right, was a rational decision.

This transition actually went surprisingly smoothly with few accidents. As someone pointed out, all neighboring countries drove on the right and a lot of people had cars that had the steering wheel on the left anyways.

Some did some didn't....but whether they knew about the camps or not. They were perfectly aware thatJews were being hauled off to camps. They also knew that once these Jews were put on trains they basically never came back. If these soldiers didn't know they could've at least figured it out that Jews were being offed. Unfortunately these soldiers and most of the German people didn't really care enough to put 2 & 2 together. A lot of American soldiers who have given testimony about liberating these camps said you could smell them for miles around.

Some of you also have to realize, that even if some of these soldiers knew bad things were happening....they were forced into being soldiers under God knows what threats. They were brainwashed into believing that Jews were being sent to work camps, not death camps. I'm sure they knew conditions were not comfortable for the Jews, but most of them had absolutely no utter idea that those people were being tortured thru medical experiments, or that they were flat out annihilating generations of families, and starving to death or dying of whatever gut wrenching disease was running rampant thru the camp. The ones who did know, were brainwashed into believing that the Jews were the reason for the collapse of the life they knew before, and Hitler was there to save them all from its even then the horrors were beyond their imagination.

To all the people saying that they don't all look disgusted: shortly after the end of the war the allied started showing raw footage of what they found at the concentration camps to the german population. They made it mandatory to watch it, however they quickly found that it didn't have the intended effect on most people. Most people didn't seem too bothered by the footage at all. The desired effect only occured after they started showing less horrid pictures in the movies (e.g. showing piles of clothes taken from the people in the camps, rather than piles of starved bodies) because these pictures were just too horrible for the mind to comprehend. I've seen some of these original movies in school and it is really not easy to comprehend that something like that could actually happen and that was probably a lot harder if you had to accept that you tolerated/didn't stop something like this. tl, dr: don't assume they are all evil just because they have blank looks on their face.

I am in no way condoning the atrocity of genocide the German people inflicted on the Jewish people, gays, Catholics, etc. That being said, the one temptation we humans give in to is taking our world view and placing over history. Don't know your age, but I am 50 yrs. old and my father, his father, and all the way up the chain, were stoic, strong, men who did unbelievable things in the face of danger and never spoke of it again. That is how they were brought up, trained and socialized. But, my father was a very compassionate, giving, generous person. My father wouldn't show an expression either, but he would do everything in his power to stop evil and to help the people whose lives were destroyed. Simply put, "Don't judge a book by its cover".

Indeed, nobody is blame free, but I'd check your definitions. Although the first modern concentration camps used to systematically dissuade rebels from fighting are usually attributed to the British during the Boer War, in the Spanish–American War, forts and camps were used by the Spanish in Cuba to separate rebels from their agricultural support bases. They've happened all through history. The USA used them to intern Native Americans in the 1830s, in the Civil war of 1860s, German and Japanese citizens in WW2. The Phillipines The word 'concentration camp' doesn't mean 'extermination camp', though it's now inextricably linked to the notion now thanks to the Nazis. It's emotive to talk of concentration camps, but to link Auschwitz as a 'concentration camp' and therefore the same as those in prior conflicts is disingenuous and revisionist.

Actually in all honesty and this is just being HONEST. If you're strait, why aren't you attracted to effeminate men? Men who wear girly clothes and have long hair? Physical attraction isn't dependent upon clothing. It's something uncontrollable, or at least I think so. I'm not attracted to anything, so there's that too.

On April 30, 1947, McHale took a train from New York to Easton, Pennsylvania to visit fiance Barry Rhodes. The next day, after leaving she returned to New York City and went to the Empire State Building where she jumped from the 86th floor observatory. Rhodes did not notice any indication of suicide before McHale left. Detective Frank Murray found her suicide note in a black pocketbook next to her neatly folded cloth coat over the observation deck wall which read: "I don't want anyone in or out of my family to see any part of me. Could you destroy my body by cremation? I beg of you and my family – don't have any service for me or remembrance for me. My fiance asked me to marry him in June. I don't think I would make a good wife for anybody. He is much better off without me. Tell my father, I have too many of my mother's tendencies."

He was put on a suicide mission as far as he was concerned. The ship was poorly designed and he died letting ground control what a horrible job the whole thing was. https://youtu.be/3Z_m7onLw74

His spaceflight on Soyuz 1 made him the first Soviet cosmonaut to fly into outer space more than once, and he became the first human to die on a space mission—he was killed when the Soyuz 1 space capsule crashed after re-entry on 24 April 1967 due to a parachute failure.[1] However, because he died when the capsule crashed into the ground, he is not considered to be the first human fatality in outer space. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Komarov

It became inconvenient to wear a hat while driving a car. Plus it became easier to wash your hair. Hats protected hair from dirt when you could only wash it once a week or less.

100percent true. Read the comment properly, it is not saying that there were no other instruments used in war to incite people to advance, direct troops. It says that it was the only instrument to be classified as a weapon (sword/gun etc.) It was banned by English after the battle of Culloden circa 1745, and re-categorised as a musical instrument in 1996.

People tend to forget that this kind of thing was very exotic. Like avocados or mango. Befoe shipping people survived on what was seasonal for their area. That is why people spent days and hours canning fruits and vegetables. So they could enjoy during the long winter. Nothing funny about it.

This picture was taken north of Jaffa, on area bought from Jibli family. The people seen here were part of Ahuzat Bayit, a society that bought land in order to build the first modern Hebrew City. They wrote plot numbers on empty sea shells to determine how to divide the area between families who invested in the project. While the area looks desolate in the picture, it was actually right next to the already existing neighborhoods Neve Tzedek and Shabazi. Nowadays, instead of a sand dune, this spot is part of Rothschild Boulevard.

The Sands are located at the south of Palestine and not where what is called "Tel Aviv" is located right now. So it is not possible that desert dunes existed in north & middle of Palestine (where Tel Aviv is located now on the taken Palestine Land). The Desert is called Al Naqab Desert where these dunes do exist.

Stolen from Palestinians? Really? After world war 2, there was no such thing as Palestine. The Jews were exterminated throughout Europe. And so the Brits, who controlled a sizeable portion of the Middle East, decided to place them in that small area (refugees anyone?) Yes, there was a small local population. Bad thing was Muslims hated Jews. And so they tried to exterminate them in the 70s. Remember the Munich Massacre? Yom Kippur war? Arabs never won. So what they do? Forced the refugees of the war they started into Palestine, increasing the population. Then f*****g planted Hezbollah to prevent peace.

she took many pills to "commit suicide" without water, even though her friends and family said she had an extremely hard time swallowing one pill with water. the day after she died, probably when her murderer remembered or realized she couldn't swallow pills, a empty cup of water was found under her bed, it wasn't there the day before when police arrived on the scene.

While the last public execution by guillotine in France, it was no where near the last execution by guillotine. That actually occurred AFTER the release of the first Star Wars film. In 1981 France banned capitol punishment so that was well and truly the end of the guillotine as a means of death penalty.

You just use your competences for a little part of the project, and you don't make questions because you are not allowed to have the answers. That thing was super secret.

That's what I told the man I was a Caregiver for. At dinner one evening he said "I don't know if I did the right thing helping create the Bomb" It's what we had to do at the time now it's gotten into bad hands. He worked alongside Oppenheimer to create the Bomb. He died at 94 2013.

The US was not the only country working to build the atomic bomb. We just got there first. And once you have that kind of power, it WILL be used. We are very fortunate that it hasn't been used since.

This actually MIGHT be Adolf Hitler but in another context. In 1923 he tried to seize power with some other guys - in German this event is called "Marsch auf die Feldherrnhalle". The lion you see on the left of the picture ist part of the "Feldherrnhalle". In the german wikipedia link you see a picture from another angle taken that day. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_Hall_Putsch https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitlerputsch

Whoa, talk about a clickbait title! Here's the *actual* caption, from the link right under this photo: "An American official punches a man in the face trying to break him from the doorway of an airplane already overloaded with refugees seeking to flee Nha Trang." Not a helicopter, not an American *evacuee* but rather an official (probably one of the ones helping run the airlift), and not taking his place but instead turning away someone trying to force his way onto an overloaded plane.

"Turning away" he's straight smacking the poor desperate bloke in the jaw... Do you see the young guy behind the 'official'? Look at his anxious face, that guy trying to get on is probably a relative. And if he doesn't get on that's the last they'll see of each other for a long time.

Slavery in the USA by Europeans was much different than "slavery" by Native Americans, and many African tribes. Missouri had some of the most heinous crimes committed against slaves than any state. (Registered crimes) Many Native Americans were classified as African here in Missouri by the census takers. Many Africans were sold as slaves to tribes here in the US, learned the languages, customs and went through the Trail of Tears...gained freedom, only to stay with their enslavers (some of which had bore children/ become family) but even today, still not recognized as anything but descendants of slaves... Crazy world. Humans kinda suck.
