Usually, when you read a history article or story, it's mostly just dry facts and your imagination. But an amazing photo gives something a bit different. It shows you how it all actually looked, letting you understand the historical moment more intimately. Whether it would be a historical landmark, a famous person or random old pictures of the past - they all have fascinating stories behind them, and we're just about to show you.
The brave photojournalists that took these interesting pictures saw the morbidity of wars, documented the creation of an atomic bomb and shot stills of most magnificent constructions being built. You might not be aware that the city of Tel-Aviv used to be just plain dunes or how someone looks after literally falling from space. Load More Replies...I can't even imagine going through that. It makes me sad not just for her but that there were that many people in one place being so mean and hurtful to a fellow human being. We like to think things have changed but there is still plenty of people to fill 1000s of high school auditoriums, who would act the same way. :( I would be heartbroken if I found out my kids ever acted this way.
Ginger snap that's why it's important to set a good example. Racism, bigotry and bulling aren't born traits they're learned. So it's up to those of us that want to see this change to set an example for the change. Be careful of how we express our anger and sadness because we always have our children watching

Austrian Boy Receives New Shoes During WWII
This picture was taken after the war, in 1946. ""New Shoes" by Gerald Waller, Austria 1946 Six year-old Werfel, living in an orphanage in Austria, hugs a new pair of shoes given to him by the American Red Cross. This photo was published by Life magazine."
I wish some kids now would appreciate sweets. People now take sweets for granted like nothing special.
Please look at the condition of his worn out shoes. I saw this picture as a child and everytime I'm able to buy new shoes I see his feet in those paper thin lace ups. We are so lucky.
Jewish Prisoners After Being Liberated From A Death Train, 1945
There weren't ONLY jewish women on that train though. In WW2 there were 6 million jews killed but 10 million others was also killed in the camps; Homosexuals,Handicapped people, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Gypsies, and others that Hitler and his regime didn't like. Let's not forget all of them.

The Graves Of A Catholic Woman And Her Protestant Husband, Holland, 1888
I think it shows how monumentally stupid human is..
Load More Replies...Every religion divides us. They teach people that they are in the RIGHT club & those that aren't in their club are going to hell. It's sad. Especially since it's all for nothing. Noone is in the right religion because there is no right religion.
For those who said that it is people who are stupid, not religion. If religion was not there would this have happened? Most likely not because there would not have been a set of holier than thou idiots making the rules for their ONLY AND SUPERIOR TO ALL OTHERS religion. There would have been no religion = no reason for this.
religion is not stupid... people are... a lot... using religion to justify actions is unhuman...religion is a need of many... we have to respect that...but it's hard to see how mean people are beeing very ignorant when using religion as a backup to their illusions
Despite all these previous comments that are critical of religion and/or humans, I purely see the strength of this couple's love from this photo. They were determined to be together and remained together in spite of the adversity created by the culture and the tradition that controlled over the society at that time.
Such a sad commentary on humanity! My husband is Jewish, I am not, we have been married 36 years. Thank God it is not like this now.
According to my late Mormon (non-practicing) husband, I will not see him when I die. As a practicing Jew, I WILL see him...

Race Organizers Attempt To Stop Kathrine Switzer From Competing In The Boston Marathon. She Became The First Woman To Finish The Race, 1967
Another classic. And imagine how many ordinary picture from today will look unbeliebable like this one in a few decades.
I just to add some info: The male runners actually helped her finish. It was the organizers that tried to pull her out of the group. The men that ran with her protected her from others that was outraged that she was in the run.
Her boyfriend is the runner to her left...he looks like he is going to take that guy apart. Two things that are the greatest motivators: fear and love. We are witnessing both in this image.

Harold Whittles Hearing Sound For The First Time, 1974
He’s actually just surprised. Getting a hearing aid is often painful physically and takes years to understand and get used to. He is not for sure happy to hear. Often deaf individuals don’t like hearing aids and take them off one they get them. It doesn’t sound like how we hear things, it’s just signals being sent to the brain by a machine that definitely doesn’t replicate “natural “ hearing. It is a very cute picture but he actually is probably confused. I preferred using sign language myself 🙂

First Morning After Sweden Changed From Driving On The Left Side To Driving On The Right, 1967
UK, Australia, and Japan don't seem to have any issues with it. :/
Load More Replies...This picture is quite irrelevant. It is taken 3 am on the Sunday morning at Kungsgatan in Stockholm - some rockers there were having fun at this very well plannend and very successfully done change from left- to right side driving. In 1967 traffic accidents went down in Sweden. Public transportations had been prepared several years for the change.
I visited Sweden a couple of years before the switch, on a school exchange. Being a passenger was quite a scary experience, because while they drove on the left, the cars were all also left-hand drive. So the driver would rely on the passengers for information when wanting to overtake and so on. While the majority of the world drives on the left, Sweden deciding to switch, when all the countries around it drove on the right, was a rational decision.
This transition actually went surprisingly smoothly with few accidents. As someone pointed out, all neighboring countries drove on the right and a lot of people had cars that had the steering wheel on the left anyways.
Someone had a very bad memory regarding that from what I can see :-)

Poor kids, just ordered to war. They had no clue what their superiors were up to. Terribly sad.
Some did some didn't....but whether they knew about the camps or not. They were perfectly aware thatJews were being hauled off to camps. They also knew that once these Jews were put on trains they basically never came back. If these soldiers didn't know they could've at least figured it out that Jews were being offed. Unfortunately these soldiers and most of the German people didn't really care enough to put 2 & 2 together. A lot of American soldiers who have given testimony about liberating these camps said you could smell them for miles around.
Load More Replies...I've Seen people Start laughing ( because There brain/mind can't handle such footage . I've visit 3 camps & always can't believe and Fight against my tears. This is the history of my grand parents (germany is my home country ). I will never 100% understand There way of thinking . I need to Apologize my horrible english. I just can say Learn, learn from the history.
You are a kind soul and your English is wonderful, don’t ever apologize for learning another language, be proud of yourself! -a happy Jewish person who agrees that we must not let history repeat itself
Load More Replies...Some of you also have to realize, that even if some of these soldiers knew bad things were happening....they were forced into being soldiers under God knows what threats. They were brainwashed into believing that Jews were being sent to work camps, not death camps. I'm sure they knew conditions were not comfortable for the Jews, but most of them had absolutely no utter idea that those people were being tortured thru medical experiments, or that they were flat out annihilating generations of families, and starving to death or dying of whatever gut wrenching disease was running rampant thru the camp. The ones who did know, were brainwashed into believing that the Jews were the reason for the collapse of the life they knew before, and Hitler was there to save them all from its even then the horrors were beyond their imagination.
To all the people saying that they don't all look disgusted: shortly after the end of the war the allied started showing raw footage of what they found at the concentration camps to the german population. They made it mandatory to watch it, however they quickly found that it didn't have the intended effect on most people. Most people didn't seem too bothered by the footage at all. The desired effect only occured after they started showing less horrid pictures in the movies (e.g. showing piles of clothes taken from the people in the camps, rather than piles of starved bodies) because these pictures were just too horrible for the mind to comprehend. I've seen some of these original movies in school and it is really not easy to comprehend that something like that could actually happen and that was probably a lot harder if you had to accept that you tolerated/didn't stop something like this. tl, dr: don't assume they are all evil just because they have blank looks on their face.
I am in no way condoning the atrocity of genocide the German people inflicted on the Jewish people, gays, Catholics, etc. That being said, the one temptation we humans give in to is taking our world view and placing over history. Don't know your age, but I am 50 yrs. old and my father, his father, and all the way up the chain, were stoic, strong, men who did unbelievable things in the face of danger and never spoke of it again. That is how they were brought up, trained and socialized. But, my father was a very compassionate, giving, generous person. My father wouldn't show an expression either, but he would do everything in his power to stop evil and to help the people whose lives were destroyed. Simply put, "Don't judge a book by its cover".
Load More Replies...And do you know who invented concentration camps? We British, in the Boer War. No one is blame free
Indeed, nobody is blame free, but I'd check your definitions. Although the first modern concentration camps used to systematically dissuade rebels from fighting are usually attributed to the British during the Boer War, in the Spanish–American War, forts and camps were used by the Spanish in Cuba to separate rebels from their agricultural support bases. They've happened all through history. The USA used them to intern Native Americans in the 1830s, in the Civil war of 1860s, German and Japanese citizens in WW2. The Phillipines The word 'concentration camp' doesn't mean 'extermination camp', though it's now inextricably linked to the notion now thanks to the Nazis. It's emotive to talk of concentration camps, but to link Auschwitz as a 'concentration camp' and therefore the same as those in prior conflicts is disingenuous and revisionist.
Load More Replies...Actually if you really look at this photo, the majority of the soldiers don't seem to be bothered at all. Your eye is drawn to the few holding their faces. But really take a look at the rest of them. Seem just fine.

Some morbid photographer stuck that in his fingers. His hand is bloody, but the card is clean.
It appears that someone stuck that card in his hand, possibly for the photo op. No blood on it and it appears to have been slid between his middle and ring finger.
The ace of spades is the mafia's death card. The killer would have put that there to make it known that it was a sanctioned hit.

Actually in all honesty and this is just being HONEST. If you're strait, why aren't you attracted to effeminate men? Men who wear girly clothes and have long hair? Physical attraction isn't dependent upon clothing. It's something uncontrollable, or at least I think so. I'm not attracted to anything, so there's that too.

The Most Beautiful Suicide - Evelyn Mchale Leapt To Her Death From The Empire State Building, 1947
A photograph taken four minutes after her death by photography student, Robert Wiles, is now considered among the most iconic suicide photographs in history, referred to as "the most beautiful suicide".
Load More Replies...On April 30, 1947, McHale took a train from New York to Easton, Pennsylvania to visit fiance Barry Rhodes. The next day, after leaving she returned to New York City and went to the Empire State Building where she jumped from the 86th floor observatory. Rhodes did not notice any indication of suicide before McHale left. Detective Frank Murray found her suicide note in a black pocketbook next to her neatly folded cloth coat over the observation deck wall which read: "I don't want anyone in or out of my family to see any part of me. Could you destroy my body by cremation? I beg of you and my family – don't have any service for me or remembrance for me. My fiance asked me to marry him in June. I don't think I would make a good wife for anybody. He is much better off without me. Tell my father, I have too many of my mother's tendencies."

The Remains Of The Astronaut Vladimir Komarov, A Man Who Fell From Space, 1967
Technically, it's cosmonaut because he's from Russia. Astronaut is for Americans
Listening posts in Turkey heard him crying in rage as he fell, cursing those who put him into a botched spacecraft
I read that he knew what would likely happen, but went anyway so that the 'next in line' cosmonaut would not have to go.
He was put on a suicide mission as far as he was concerned. The ship was poorly designed and he died letting ground control what a horrible job the whole thing was. https://youtu.be/3Z_m7onLw74
No shouting or screaming. That is a myth. The man did the best he could do as controlled as possible until the very last. http://www.spacesafetymagazine.com/space-disasters/soyuz-1/
An astronaut or cosmonaut is a person trained by a human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft

True, they also took that hat off when eating at restaurants or at home. Shame curtesy has disappeared from this current world.

It became inconvenient to wear a hat while driving a car. Plus it became easier to wash your hair. Hats protected hair from dirt when you could only wash it once a week or less.

100percent true. Read the comment properly, it is not saying that there were no other instruments used in war to incite people to advance, direct troops. It says that it was the only instrument to be classified as a weapon (sword/gun etc.) It was banned by English after the battle of Culloden circa 1745, and re-categorised as a musical instrument in 1996.

About 100 People Participate In A Lottery To Divide A 12 Acre Plot Of Sand Dunes, That Would Later Become The City Of Tel Aviv, 1909
This picture was taken north of Jaffa, on area bought from Jibli family. The people seen here were part of Ahuzat Bayit, a society that bought land in order to build the first modern Hebrew City. They wrote plot numbers on empty sea shells to determine how to divide the area between families who invested in the project. While the area looks desolate in the picture, it was actually right next to the already existing neighborhoods Neve Tzedek and Shabazi. Nowadays, instead of a sand dune, this spot is part of Rothschild Boulevard.
The Sands are located at the south of Palestine and not where what is called "Tel Aviv" is located right now. So it is not possible that desert dunes existed in north & middle of Palestine (where Tel Aviv is located now on the taken Palestine Land). The Desert is called Al Naqab Desert where these dunes do exist.
Stolen from Palestinians? Really? After world war 2, there was no such thing as Palestine. The Jews were exterminated throughout Europe. And so the Brits, who controlled a sizeable portion of the Middle East, decided to place them in that small area (refugees anyone?) Yes, there was a small local population. Bad thing was Muslims hated Jews. And so they tried to exterminate them in the 70s. Remember the Munich Massacre? Yom Kippur war? Arabs never won. So what they do? Forced the refugees of the war they started into Palestine, increasing the population. Then f*****g planted Hezbollah to prevent peace.

she took many pills to "commit suicide" without water, even though her friends and family said she had an extremely hard time swallowing one pill with water. the day after she died, probably when her murderer remembered or realized she couldn't swallow pills, a empty cup of water was found under her bed, it wasn't there the day before when police arrived on the scene.

Well, Christopher Lee was one of them! Not really the serial killer type. ;)

Do you know for sure it's the UK? Cops look American.
Load More Replies...While the last public execution by guillotine in France, it was no where near the last execution by guillotine. That actually occurred AFTER the release of the first Star Wars film. In 1981 France banned capitol punishment so that was well and truly the end of the guillotine as a means of death penalty.

I totally agree, but the guy there maybe doesn't know the bomb's effects. When you work in such a project, that doesn't mean that you know everything. You just use your competences for a little part of the project, and you don't make questions because you are not allowed to have the answers. That thing was super secret.

I find myself a bit skeptical too. He was a nobody then. Peculiar coincidence then to find him in a random photo, and he supposedly looked exactly the same 20 years prior to when he came to power?
Load More Replies...I've seen other pictures of Adolf Hitler from WW1.... that looks nothing like him. At all. I disagree that this is him. Incorrect.
It doesn't really look like him except the moustache. There were other men who wore this moustache style then. We just automatically associate it with him
This actually MIGHT be Adolf Hitler but in another context. In 1923 he tried to seize power with some other guys - in German this event is called "Marsch auf die Feldherrnhalle". The lion you see on the left of the picture ist part of the "Feldherrnhalle". An American Evacuee Punches A South Vietnamese Man For A Place On The Last Chopper Out Of The US Embassy During The Evacuation Of Saigon In 1975
This man deserved more than the American invader to be on this chopper. Push the American s**t out of the chopper while its at full speed!
Whoa, talk about a clickbait title! Here's the *actual* caption, from the link right under this photo: "An American official punches a man in the face trying to break him from the doorway of an airplane already overloaded with refugees seeking to flee Nha Trang." Not a helicopter, not an American *evacuee* but rather an official (probably one of the ones helping run the airlift), and not taking his place but instead turning away someone trying to force his way onto an overloaded plane.
"Turning away" he's straight smacking the poor desperate bloke in the jaw... Do you see the young guy behind the 'official'? Look at his anxious face, that guy trying to get on is probably a relative. And if he doesn't get on that's the last they'll see of each other for a long time.

A Group Of Men Posing In Front Of Lynch’s Slave Market, St. Louis, Missouri, 1852
you folks need to get off your high horse slavery didnt start in 1861, the romans had slaves, as did the greeks, the chineese, afericans, even native americans had black slaves even after the end of the civil war. every race on every part of this planet has had slaves, people still have slaves today, tomorrow and the day after that and the day ofter that, actor Don Cheadle family were slaves to the Chickasaw nation from an artical "I was astonished when our researchers uncovered an 1898 enrollment card for the Chickasaw freedmen — an official document listing slaves who were owned by the Chickasaw nation. The card includes the names of Don's great-great-grandmother, Mary, and some of her 11 children, including Don's great-grandfather, William. Don's ancestors were enslaved by Native Americans, the Chickasaw. They had been living in Indian Territory, and joined the march from Mississippi with their enslavers on the Trail of Tears. Slavery in the USA by Europeans was much different than "slavery" by Native Americans, and many African tribes. Missouri had some of the most heinous crimes committed against slaves than any state. (Registered crimes) Many Native Americans were classified as African here in Missouri by the census takers. Many Africans were sold as slaves to tribes here in the US, learned the languages, customs and went through the Trail of Tears...gained freedom, only to stay with their enslavers (some of which had bore children/ become family) but even today, still not recognized as anything but descendants of slaves... Crazy world. Humans kinda suck.
