Thats not their actual hair--that's very clearly weave. When black people say "natural hair," we're talking about our natural hair texture without chemical manipulation (e.g. relaxers).

Depends on what kind of respect we're talking about. Do you want to be respected around your neighbors? Sure, earn it. But being respected in general as a human being? Being respected as a woman by a male? Those aren't things anyone should have to work for.

To demand respect doesn't mean he doesn't teach her to respect. You first need to know your rights and then your duties, they go hand in hand. And to know how to respect others first you need to know how to respect yourself.

Everyone deserves respect until they prove they don't. And you sound like you search for a reason to disrespect people.

You can demand respect as a human being you know, if you can't respect a person because they didn't EARN your respect, at least respect them as humans, respect their rights as a person, the same goes for animals, respect them because they DESERVE respect at least for surviving and being alive. EVERYONE DESERVES a little bit of respect.

Totally agree. Respect is earned by giving respect to others, and thinking yourself on a pedestal might not be the best way to go about it. It's a delicate balance. He should teach her to love herself, but not necessarily to put herself first in all situations - that's too close to selfishness

I disagree. Every human on this planet deserves to be treated with respect. Perhaps people might do things that will lower your respect from them, but we are all entitled to be treated with it from the outset. Saying things like respect should be earned essentially means that you will be disrespectful to EVERYONE unless they jump through the hoops you want them to jump through and that's just wrong.

Jim, I think what he is saying or at least what I am understanding him to say is that the way you carry yourself will earn you that respect that is due a person. When you present yourself with pride and self respect, you command demand or earn the respect of your elders, peers and young peopl. Exactly! I hope he is teaching her how to show respect to others. If she runs around demanding respect and saying she is a Nubian Princess, it won't get her far in this world.

It does because we're not used to seeing it in the Western parts of the world. Kissing/pecking your child on the lips is an ancient form of love and affection that remains in hundreds of cultures around the world. I do agree that it looks a little bit staged/odd and more romantic that affectionate. I think the photographer set it up like that to commercialize it more, and that's what's throwing us off.
