There are many enjoyable winter activities - snuggling up in a blanket, drinking hot cocoa and reading a book. There are also the ones that involve outdoors - freezing to death and sloshing through half-melted snow. On those exceptional days, though, when the sun is shining, and the cold is pleasantly nipping your cheeks, you can also build a snowman!
So when heavy snowfall hit the lands of Japan, locals did precisely that. They made snow sculptures of famous characters from Studio Ghibli movies, Pokémon or even viral videos.
It's not uncommon to see funny snowmen or fantastic sculptures in Japan, but they're usually seen during the annual Sapporo Snow Festival. It draws thousands of spectators who get to pick their favorites out of thousands of sculptures depicting popular characters. But this time the snow is so plentiful that everybody got to join in the fun, creating their unique artworks.

Anpanman is a superhero with a head made of anpan (bread roll filled with bean jam). He is a very kind and selfless hero. He flies around to patrol the land to find anyone in need. If he finds anyone who is hungry, he can remove pieces of his head to feed to them, but he gets weaker the more pieces are given away. http://www.awgosh.com/anpanmanchara.html
