“Kitten Owners, Don’t Make The Same Mistake I Did”

When this cat owner saw there was something terribly wrong with her pet Ollie, she took him to the vet’s where they did an X-ray and found something weird inside the kitty’s stomach and intestines.

After the risky $4,000 surgery, the vets found out it was hair ties. “[Friggin’] hair ties, my hair ties! He ate so many of them that they got lodged into his intestines and suffocated part of it so they had to cut the dead intestines and sew together the ends,” wrote the owner.

“When they showed me this bag of hair ties I wanted to hit myself… I felt so horrible for my ignorance.”

“I would see him chewing up my hair ties and I would try to stop him, but I did not see or know he was actually swallowing them. I did not know the severity of the situation.”

She took to social media to tell the story of what happened to her cat, in hopes of other cat owners not having to go through the same scare, horror, and financial expense for such a silly thing as letting your cat chew on stuff.

“I wanted to tell this story because I’m not sure if other people know this about cats. Ollie almost died. I don’t want this to happen to other cats and cat owners.”

I don't get it. She saw her cat chewing on hair ties multiple times before and even tried to stop him but still didn't put the hair ties out of reach? What the hell?

Define "out of reach" for a cat, haha. Also, sometimes they just fall out of a pocket or off the hair etc. I think she learned her lesson about keeping them away from kitty though

Our cat, Truman, ate some string when he was a kitten. Same result: blockage, surgery, removal of part of the intestine. Glad your furbaby is ok. Ours ended up living a long, full life, 16 years of it. Xo

I just cleaned up cat puke this morning. Cat ate the little plastic thing that holds clothes on the hanger, which had been recently cut off and discovered by kitty. Cats will eat anything. They are pretty good at barfing stuff up. I feel bad for this kitty and family, but we shouldn't get all worked up and neurotically hide hair ties. The cat will just find something else. Other than trying to keep little items away and secured, you can't do much. Cats are going to do what they want. I love my kitties, but sometimes, they are the worst.

I do believe in putting known harmful items out of reach, but my kitty likes to eat hair and I find it connecting his poo in the litter box. There's no way I can fix this problem--short of shaving mine & my husband's heads.
