I could no more have left my child in the car than leave my heart in there while I wandered around. I don't understand the lack of connection that would allow something like this to take place. I really don't.

Sorry Michelle, but even if you exhausted, even if you had an argument and never, never!!!! Drive after a night of heavy drinking, you just don't forget a kid in the car. As I don't forget to feed my dog and cat even when I have the worst hangover, you just don't forget about a kid. It's not like an item what you have forgotten to buy " oops I didn't buy the yogurt, doesn't matter ". It's a kid, a living thing and I can't see any good reason to leave a kid alone in a car ( not even at spring time). Ok the only good reason if you want to protect the kid but it's another topic

I along with a lot of other parents whether tired or whatever excuse you can think of Don't & I repeat Don't leave a child in a hot vehicle for any reason! I'm sorry but it doesn't mean we are perfect but call it whatever you want, it means we have sense enough to know when we place a child in a vehicle!! Maybe you don't but I would never leave a child or pet in a vehicle alone for any reason!! I have raised 4 children & have grandchildren & great grandchildren I work 3 jobs & still never once left any children in a hot vehicle & it doesn't mean I'm perfect!! It means I care about my children & have sense enough to know leaving a child unattended in a vehicle is just plain stupid & I also have know when I put a child in the vehicle that guess what, I know the child is there. So for the excuses of I forgot the kid is there while you go shopping is exactly just that an EXCUSE!! Nothing to do with being perfect!!

We're perfectly aware that it's horrific and unthinkable. We're just not idiots who think they know it all and condemn all cases where children have died in cars as all being the same reason. You know, like you don't have one murder charge that covers all people who kill whether intentionally, by accident, in self defence, by negligence etc. it's called being s human being and not a flaming torch carrying Neanderthal. And I love how about half the people commenting here aren't parents. I am a parent (all adults now) and I never did this either. But I understand exactly how it happens. Millions of parents across the country are taking steps to make sure this doesn't happen to them. This tells me that I am not alone.

Amen. "Judge not..." I understand the anger and urge to condemn, but Empathy and horror are more appropriate, I think. That parent (in cases when it is a parent & child)--actually, anyone who has done such a terrible thing- as you said, will never be able to escape their grief and guilt. It is far better to grieve and try to prevent more instances than condemn and cry for death for punishment.

My own father used to work 3 jobs and got forgetful because of it. He took me to daycare one day but didn't actually take me out of the car. He thought he did though because it was part of his routine. He proceeded to drive to work with me in the back seat. He realised what he'd done, freaked out and looked in the back mirror to see me there and got in a wreck because of the distraction. Exhaustion is worse than being drunk. myth busters proved it.

Leaving your baby in a hot car is NOT, I repeat NOT a "mistake", it is negligence and there is NO excuse for it!

How do you forget your child?l? I have forgotten where I parked, or even what vehicle we drove. I have forgotten to pack extra diapers or to pick up milk. But not once did I ever forget that I had 1 or all 3 of the kids with me. Quite the contrary in fact. I once drove for over 150Km (94 miles) not only listening to, but singing along with, The Wiggles, Raphie, and the like before realising I was alone in the car.

I'm sorry. This isn't your cell phone or your keys. I would have a better chance of forgetting to dress myself before going to work and showing up naked, then I would leaving my babies in the car.

Many of these cases are accidents. They absolutely destroy the lives of everyone involved.

Olga, it's not an "accident" like accidentally kicking over a bucket. It's that the parents (not all, some are just plain idiots) are completely certain that they dropped the kid off in daycare, or are 100% certain that the kid was with the other parent. In that regard, it's "accident" in the same way that you 'forget' to close the door to the yard, or leave the stove on before going on Holiday. People are convinced that they locked it/switched it off. So for all the parents who had this happen, I feel deep regret. Of course they are to blame in the sense that there is really no-one else who is at fault. And those idiots that leave their kid in the car fully aware and go partying ... well. I just hope they won't reproduce again.

I'd say it's about as unintentional as me "accidentally" stabbing someone in the heart 4 times. Maybe we should make a tool that warns me after the second stab that she or he might die. Better safe than sorry right? See how stupid this sounds? You cannot blame everything on outside sources. There is a line where things are just plain YOUR responsibility. And leaving a kid in a car is definitely yours. If you can't do that you shouldn't get a child.

lets see... if a person leaves their child in a car, they are not a responsible person.... so if they're not responsible, why would they then be responsible enough to purchase this device.... it will probably be added to every car as a saftey device, not bought individually.

This is what happens in most cases here in the US, but as you can tell from several of these comments...so many people are quick to judge and label them "bad parents" who should have known better. The vast majority of these accidents happen when there is a change in the parent or child's schedule, for example one parent usually takes the child and for some reason the other parent has to when they're not used to. They just automatically drive to work like normal and get out without thinking, when you've driven the same way for 10 years it becomes habit..it's awful and terrible, but it happens.

AND I said nobody would have left the baby in a car BY CHOICE. And yes I was generalising the american people because I was schocked with realisation you have people there who are doing this by choice.

The US has over 300+ million people. Don't treat us as though we're all the same. Of course judge our government all you want because it is super f****d up. But not the general public.

People (for the most part) do not leave their children in their cars on purpose. Typically what happens is the EXACT same scenario you described. What's the difference? It's hotter here. Much hotter. This probably happens in your country more than you realize, but given the temperature difference, there are no deaths, therefore no reports. Please stop acting like your compatriots are superior to Americans. When these things happen here, barring some insane lunatic, it absolutely destroys everyone.
